2012 - Adieu!

What a wild year. Lots of fun. Very hectic. Lots of change.

We started the year with a family trip to North Carolina to watch my brother Steven graduate from Marine Corp boot camp. He's now stationed in Japan.  Rory turned two. We had a little party for her, I bought, rather than made, a cake.  We went to Party Arty in full Steam Punk gear, courtesy of my seamstress friend, Tam.
In February I surprised Ryan by flying his brother in as a surprise birthday present. We celebrated Valentine's Day at home by making beef wellington (which ended up costing as much as going out).

In March I got a little more active in KC, judging an air guitar competition and presenting at the KC AMBIT awards (where my inability to say N-C-Double-A got some laughs. I don't do sports).

My mom and Carter visited in April, and I put in my notice at emfluence. Ryan spent some time traveling for work.

I don't remember what we did for our anniversary this year, but Ryan did more traveling in May to train for his new job. This solidified my choice to stay home, as childcare issues cropped up when he was unavailable. I finished up work with emfluence at the User Conference, and celebrated with our annual BBQ that weekend.

In June I started working at a friend's bar to make extra money for Paris. My friend Carrie started coming over on Wednesday mornings to exercise, drink coffee, and watch Gilmore Girls. Rory and I went to New England at the end of the month, and stayed through the Fourth of July.
In July we went the Nelson's White Party (one of my favorite's) and I stopped boxing and moved towards pilates.

I turned 30 in August and there was no shortage of festivities. My mom and brothers came to celebrate. There was a BBQ, roller derby, karaoke, a surprise party, dinner at my favorite restaurant, dancing to my favorite local group, and a romantic dinner out with Ryan. Excessive doesn't begin to describe it. I had a blast, was completely wiped the week after, and plan on being slightly more mellow for my 31st. Ryan wrecked our Bonneville, and I got to choose a car for myself for the first time in my life (a 2006 pearl white Murano I have named Marilyn). At the end of August we drove to Colorado to spend Labor Day at the cabin.

The rest of September was a whirlwind of travel. After a long weekend at the cabin, we were home long enough to put an offer in an on a rental house, and I started roller skating, with the goal of trying out for Derby (it proved too time consuming). The three of us went to Washington to visit Ryan's brother and we had a fantastic time sailing, eating, playing board games, and relaxing. At the end of September my friend Jess and I headed to Paris and ate and shopped and had a ridiculously decadent time. We also closed on the rental house.
I came back home in October hating every picture of me taken in France, so I started working with a personal trainer four days after I got home. I continued skating. Rory and I got back into our normal library, gym, errands, rhythm. I threw a French themed dinner at our house.

In November we hung out at home and with friends. We drove to Colorado for Thanksgiving, where I cooked the turkey and had my first Ewing Thanksgiving (and Rory met her second cousin). When we got back my car got broken into and desecrated during a very long Friday night. I found a renter for the house before our first mortgage payment!

December saw our usual Christmas party (this year with bartenders and incredible). We celebrated the holidays over lots of evenings. Cutting down the tree and decorating. Driving around looking at Christmas lights. Making sugar cookies. A Christmas movie and Chinese food night. I scheduled out the whole month. Christmas morning we stayed home and opened presents (a gorgeous Swarovski tennis bracelet and silver dress for me, a whiskey decanter, cuff links, and tie for Ryan, a doll house and contents of a toy store for Rory). After that we went to Columbia to celebrate with Ryan's family for a few days. We'll be ringing in the New Year at home with a few friends, playing board games.

Not a bad year. This year I am focusing more on being frugal and a better homemaker. I'm really good at being busy. I want to be good at being still.
